IMPACT OF CHRISTIANITY ON THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF ILESA

Abstract

Christianity is one of the major religions in the world. It is the religion of those who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and in the Gospel of salvation through faith in the same Jesus Christ. The religion came with civilisation to Nigeria and has played a big role in the good governance and development of Nigeria. The early Christian missionaries and Church leaders participated actively in the local administration, they served as agents to district officers, as local government officials, they served as teachers in schools and as interpreters to English officers in charge of district administrations. Thus, good governance, growth and development of the people were greatly influenced by Christianity. However, its impact on the growth and development in terms of education, social and health services in Ilesa has not been adequately addressed. This article therefore seeks to analyse the impact of Christianity on the growth and development of Ilesa. The methodology adopted is sociological and historical methods. This is with a view to understanding the significance and influence of Christianity in Ilesa.
